The Confessions of Frannie Langton (2022)

Karla-Simone Spence and Sophie Cookson star in the 2022 adaptation of Sara Collins’ 2019 novel “The Confessions of Frannie Langton.”

The mini-series was adapted for the screen by Collins and follows the story of Frannie Langton (Spence), a former Jamaican sugar plantation slave working as a maid in London in 1826, who is put on trial for the murder of her employers – the Benhams.

The details of the crime are unclear as Frannie wakes up in bed next to her deceased mistress, Madame Marguerite Benham (Cookson), and is then arrested and thrown into prison. From the beginning it is unclear how Marguerite and her husband died, but it is apparent that she and Frannie were involved romantically. As the story unfolds we learn of Frannie’s complicated and tragic past, and of her love for Marguerite, while she awaits trial.
