GOLDEN DELICIOUS is set in East-Vancouver and follows Jake (Wong), an Asian-Canadian teen who is struggling under the pressures of familial expectations while attempting to navigate his way through his final year of high school. His father wants him to focus on basketball and try out for his school’s team, though Jake is much more interested in photography. However, his interests shift when he starts to bond with Aleks (Carson), his handsome gay neighbour, over basketball. Jake begins to have feelings for Aleks and he soon finds himself trying out for the basketball team to impress his new friend.

When discussing the film with BC Creates, Karman stated, “I hope viewers, especially from underrepresented communities, use this film to discuss more complicated things holding them back. I also hope viewers, especially older ones, can empathize with the younger generation and what they are going through with social media being so prevalent in their lives. Being inundated with imagery on who to be, how to be and when to do things can be anxiety-inducing, especially during one’s formative years.”

This is what sets GOLDEN DELICIOUS apart from many of the coming-of-age queer stories of the past, its focus on how social media plays a role in the lives of today’s youths and how it can affect a “coming out” experience. Additionally, the film features two Asian men as the romantic leads, which is a pairing we don’t see enough in western queer media.

GOLDEN DELICIOUS premiered to a sold-out screening at the Vancouver International Film Festival in 2022, and then traveled the festival circuit garnering critical praise and numerous awards along the way.
