1972 – DAUGHTER OF DRACULA – Tubi (USA)

In literature the lesbian vampire predates “Dracula” and was first introduced in Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1872 Gothic novella “Carmilla.” Additionally, both stories are thought to have been inspired (in part) by tales of the infamous 17th century Countess Elizabeth Bathory, who is said to have bathed in the blood of her victims in an attempt to stay young.

Bathory and Carmilla are featured, or referenced, quite frequently in the lesbian vampire films. The 1970 Hammer horror flick THE VAMPIRE LOVERS is an adaptation of Le Fanu’s story – and 1971’s DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS features Bathory as the main vampire. Unfortunately, like most of the horror films of the period, you can probably guess how things turn out for our queer vampire friends.

My personal favourites on the list are the first three, or (not listed above) THE HUNGER (1983) and DRACULA’S DAUGHTER (1936). If you’re looking for something that ends a little happier, check out BIT (2019).
