NOPE (2022)

Keke Palmer is Emerald, the lesbian heroine of writer/director Jordan Peele’s 2022 sci-fi horror film NOPE.

NOPE

2022. USA.

Director: Jordan Peele

Screenplay: Jordan Peele

Starring: Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Brandon Perea, and Michael Wincott

The film follows two siblings, OJ and Emerald, as they take over their father’s horse ranch, and the family business, after his sudden passing. Strange things start to happen and soon they realize that the odd occurrences on the ranch may be connected to a mysterious flying object hiding in the clouds.

One of the great things about NOPE is that one of its two main protagonists, and the heroine of the film, is a queer woman of color. Hollywood doesn’t have the greatest track record with queer characters in horror films- they very often die and are very seldom one of the protagonists – Emerald is a strong character that beats the usual tropes…plus, Keke Palmer is fantastic in the role.

You can find NOPE streaming on Crave (Canada), Starz (USA), Netflix (UK), Prime (Mexico) – it’s otherwise available for rent/purchase through AppleTV & Amazon, and also available on DVD/Blu-ray.
