Novelette is Trying (2024)

The countdown to the Vancouver Queer Film Festival is officially on. We’re quickly nearing the world premiere of NOVELETTE IS TRYING. Tickets are currently on sale so get yours before they are sold out.

NOVELETTE IS TRYING is a series created by Orange Rose Films (@producedbygiselle on Instagram) that specifically highlights Black queer women in Vancouver. It follows Novelette, a young Jamaican-Canadian queer woman, who is anti-social, petty and a classic underachiever. When her partner ends their relationship, this throws Novelette’s whole life off-balance and what ensues is a journey of emotional growth and finding her purpose.

NOVELETTE IS TRYING is an authentic look at how millennials grapple with contemporary issues like relationships, housing, financial stress, and mental health through a Black queer lens. Novelette’s relationship to the three Black women in her life take centre stage in this comedy. Her overbearing mother, her meddling roommate and her sultry neighbour each have an impact on her, allowing her to mature and take responsibility for her life.

With a leading cast of all Black women, this show signals a change in what we typically see emerging from Vancouver’s indie scene. This is a series that centres the tiny Black, queer community in our city. Being produced through her company Orange Rose Productions, NOVELETTE IS TRYING is Miller’s fourth short form series.
