THE INCREDIBLY TRUE ADVENTURE OF 2 GIRLS IN LOVE was written by Maggenti in 1994 and filmed on a very limited budget. The script was developed in a screenwriting class at NYU and was based loosely on Maggenti’s own experiences falling in love in her teenage years. She elaborated that, “What I was concentrating on was how it feels to be seventeen and in love for the first time. I went back to notes that I wrote in high school to my first boyfriend, I called my friends from high school, I really plumbed all of those depths.”
In the early development of the screenplay Maggenti was persuaded by a friend to shop the story around to independent film producers. Within a few days there was interest, but there was only a partial script. Maggenti completed the screenplay in 8 days in order to attain funding for the film.
THE INCREDIBLY TRUE ADVENTURE OF 2 GIRLS IN LOVE premiered at Sundance film festival in 1995 and received a limited theatrical release a few months later. The film also won a GLAAD Media Award for “Outstanding Film – Limited Release” the following year in 1996.
